An Employee Who Won’t Lead

You can never assume that a person knows how or when to lead. Most reluctant leaders do not own the obligation or see the need to stand up and say, “I’ll do it.”

If you want employees to serve as a change agents, influencers, or leaders, you must start by asking if they are willing to make a difference. Your next action is to encourage them to take charge of the situation. Next, impress upon them how they will benefit by taking charge. Your last action is to serve as their backstop.

You cannot expect your fledgling influencer to fly solo immediately. You must take the reluctant leaders by the wing and fly with them until their wings grow strong.
